Opening Ceremony
Papahana wehena or opening ceremonies in Hawaii reflect traditional Hawaiian values, including ho’okipa (hospitality/welcome), ho’ihi (respect), aloha (compassion) and lokahi (inclusiveness). We begin with oli, or chants of welcome, laying a strong foundation for our conference. Hula kahiko (traditional dances) acknowledge our lands, history and heritage. Pule or prayer will bring us all together in the spirit of aloha as we work collectively toward a successful meeting.

Open to Success Series attendees and their guests, this ticketed event offers a taste of Success Series and Honolulu. Begin the day with continental breakfast followed by the opening session. At 9:30 am you’ll depart the Hawaii Convention Center.
The Iolani Palace, home of King Kalakaua and his successor Queen Lilli’uokalani, is your first stop. The history of the Palace and a view of the Hawaiian Monarchy will be brought to life by the docent that escorts you through this historic landmark. Just across the street from the Palace is the Hawaii State Art Museum and your second stop. The galleries and exhibits of the museum will be open for you to view and take-in as you wish.
Finally, weather permitting, you’ll end your morning with a concert by the Royal Hawaiian Band on the grounds of the Iolani Palace. Enjoy your gourmet box lunch as the music and trade winds engulf you.

Royal Hawaiian Center is the premier shopping and entertainment destination in Waikiki, with more than 310,000 square feet of retail space along a three-block stretch of Waikiki’s famed Kalakaua Avenue. A dynamic mix of 110 world-class retailers, restaurants and entertainment options can be found at the four-level Center on more than six acres of prime Waikiki real estate owned by Kamehameha Schools. A $115 million renovation has transformed the dynamics of Waikiki by providing visitors and kama’aina (locals) the largest public gathering space for entertainment and culture.
Join us as we take you through the rich history of Helumoa, a retreat favored by Hawaiian royalty. The tour will be led by Manu Boyd, the Center’s cultural director, who will tell the story of Princess Pauahi, the benefactor who bequeathed her vast real estate holdings to a trust that is now the largest private landowner in the State of Hawaii and which supports Kamehameha Schools. Manu will also describe the cultural programs featured at the Center and the Center’s role in the new direction of Waikiki. Manu will be joined by Marleen Akau, the Center’s general manager, who will discuss the tenant mix—Hawaii’s largest collection of international flagship stores—and the Center’s marketing strategies that help it achieve some of the highest rents and sales per square foot in the country.
